The Monroe County Reporter, May 1977

(contributed to Zellner website by Jan Chambers)

A major astronomical breakthrough which is being heralded internationally is the discovery and confirmation of the rings of Uranus.  Participating in this major structural discover in the solar system was Dr. Benjamin Holmes Zellner, III, the son of Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Zellner, Jr., of Culloden, Georgia.

Teams from India, Cornell University and the University of Arizona, of which Dr. Zellner is a member, flew to Perth, Australia, to observe the alignment between Uranus and a star.  It was the Cornell team that first reported seeing the rings of  Uranus, but the other two teams made similar reports almost simultaneously.  Of all the sightings only Dr. Zellner captured the rings on tape, which would confirm discovery.  The Cornell team reported five rings, but Dr. Zellner's tape confirmed only two.

In addition to research with the University of Arizona Luna and Planetary Laboratory, Dr. Zellner has worked at the University of Paris and has lectured at other European universities.
