Extract of letter
written by Ben H. Zellner to Margaret Zellner ... Nashville, Tenn
The grand father of my
... and cousin Henry Zellner, and your great grand father was Geo. Peter
Zellner, was not of the Holland or low dutch, he was of the German or high
Dutch, and came from Hanover Germany.
He was one of the soldiers hired by England to fight in a cause in which
they had no interest what ever. When
the army was dispersed by Gen. Washington near Long Island in vicinity of New
York our grand father drifted down into N.C. went to making boots, shoes,
saddles, etc. Then to making and ... tar kilns in Bertie County at Winsdor
County seat. Married a Miss Capeheart,
and at her death married his cousin who was our grand mother Mary Capeheart,
both of them were very religiously inclined.
When my father Andrew Zellner was 6 months old they moved to Lincoln
County Ga. My grand mother Mary
Capeheart died in 1848 aged 84 years.

Marion Zellner
Cumberland
Presbyterian Minister
1817-1895
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ZELLNER.--Rev. M.
Zellner passed away peacefully Nov. 10, 1895, at his home in Fayette County,
Tenn. He was born in Georgia in July, 1817, and in childhood came with his
parents to Maury County, Tenn. He embraced religion in 1834, at a camp meeting
held by the Methodists, and afterwards moved to Oxford, Miss., and joined the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was married to M. A. Alexander in 1834, and
removed, in 1846, to Fayette County, Tenn., where he remained until his death.
He was received as a candidate under the care of the Memphis Presbytery, in
1848, and was ordained in 1857. Although his education was limited, he had by
nature a fine mind. By his diligence and perseverance in the use of his mind he
soon became a man of more than ordinary information. He soon became popular as
a preacher, and was ever in demand as a pastor. His efficiency was demonstrated
by the long pastorate he held at his last charge, which was one of more than
twenty years, and was recognized as one of the best organized churches in the
presbytery. He was a warm friend and supporter of all the enterprises of his
church. He took especial interest in young men preparing for the ministry, and
for years served as Chairman of Committee on Examination. The writer remembers
with pleasure the encouragement received from him. As a presbyter he had few
equals. No member of the Memphis Presbytery has, perhaps, been, since his
inability to attend, so missed in its meetings as he has. He leaves an aged
widow, who was truly a helpmate through all the years of his faithful and
useful life. He also leaves seven children, and a host of admiring friends.

THE REV. MARION
ZELLNER.
By Rev. T. H. Padgett.
Rev. M. Zellner to
whose virtues and memory this sketch is devoted was born in the State of
Georgia in July of the year 1817. While he was yet a child he with his parents
moved to Maury county, Tennessee. In the year 1834 he embraced religion at a
camp meeting. Some time after this he moved to Oxford, Miss., where he joined
the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In the same year of his conversion he was
married to Miss M. A. Alexander. In 1846 he returned to the State of Tennessee,
settling near the town of Hickory Withe in Fayette county. In the year 1848,
having convictions as to a call to the ministry, he was received as a candidate
under the care of the Memphis Presbytery, and was in 1857 ordained to the full
work of the ministry. Brother Zellner died on Sunday morning, November 10,
1895, at the advanced age of seventy-eight years, he having thus gone beyond
his three-score and ten years, and by reason of strength having almost attained
to the greater period of four-score years. From the above dates it will be seen
that Brother Zellner was in the work of the ordained ministry for a period of
thirty-eight years. For many years Brother Zellner was the subject of great and
trying afflictions, but in the midst of it all he did what he could with the
greatest Christian fortitude.
The writer of this
sketch was often at the home of Brother Zellner while he was living and
therefore he knows something of his admirable home-life. He also knew him as a
co-presbyter for he was associated with him in that capacity. Besides this the
writer and Brother Zellner labored together more than once in protracted
meetings.
Because of such
intimate acquaintance and because of some additional facts gathered during a
recent visit to Mrs. Zellner at the old home place, the author of this sketch
can say with confidenceand truth:
1. That although it
has been five years since Brother Zellner's death yet there is a host of friends
of this good man who will hail with delight the opportunity to see the face of
one they loved so well even in picture form, and who will also be greatly
pleased to see again in print any lines which may speak of his virtues.
2. Brother Zellner was
a true man, both in the family and in the wider sphere of his citizenship. This
was learned from observation and also from the general reputation borne by
Brother Zellner prior to his death and since. The writer does not remember ever
to have heard a word contrary to this general statement, but many times he
heard and saw much to warrant what is here said.
3. Brother Zellner was
a preacher of no mean ability, and his many efforts in his appointed work were
crowned with happy success. During his long ministry he preached at Pleasant
Grove, Shady Grove, Mt. Carmel, Morning Sun, Hickory Withe, Mt. Pleasant,
Germantown, Collierville and other places. He was instrumental in establishing
churches at Morning Sun, Hickory Withe, Galloway, Bartlett and other places.
4. Brother Zellner was
a fine presbyter. This was on all-hands conceded by those who knew him in that
capacity. The same cannot be said of everyone whether among the dead or the
living. Brother Zellner knew our Book and customs to perfection. Besides, his
patienceand grace made it possible to him so to present his points and plans as
to cause but little friction. Thus he kept the favor of all and was almost sure
to carry any point he rightly sought.
5. Brother Zellner was
a friend to all the enterprises of the church and cheerfully did what he could
for their support. He not only gave of his own means, but he interested others
in their behalf. He took an especial interest in encouraging young men who
sought to go into the ministry, and in that way has left a large influence in
the world--an influence which, though he is dead, lives in the life and works
of others.
6. Brother and Mrs.
Zellner were the parents of ten children, four of whom are dead. The wife and
mother still lives in the old home near Hickory Withe. Their daughter Fannie,
who since became Mrs. McNeely, lives with her. They are sweet-spirited and
intelligent Christian women. John W. Zellner lives a few miles away. He is a
good citizen and a fine worker in the church of which he is a member. Another
son, J. A. Zellner, lives at Milan, Tenn., while H. Partner Zellner lives on
the old homestead. Two daughters of these parents are Mrs. Anna Alexander and
Mrs. Jossie Wilson.
7. Brother Zellner was
Chaplain of the Thirteenth Tennessee Calvary, and at the time of his death he
was the only minister living who was a member of the Memphis Presbytery when he
joined it.
Of Brother Zellner it
may be truly said that he fought a good fight, that he finished his course,
that he kept the faith, and that he is now in the enjoyment of that crown of
righteousness which the Lord shall give to all in that day; or to use the
figure of another, "He came to his grave in a full age, like as a shock of
corn cometh in his season."

Gold Bar of Honor
Given Mother Whose Son Was Confederate Soldier
A beautiful and
touching ceremony occurred in Arlington, TN last week when Mrs. Martha A.
Zellner was presented with a gold bar of honor in token of the fact that she
was the mother of a son who fought in the Confederate army during the dark days
in 1861-65. Mrs. Zellner will be 100
years old in October.
Representatives of
five generations were present when the bar was pinned upon Mrs. Zellner. It was the gift of the Southern Confederate
Memorial Association and Mrs. Charles W. Frazier, state president from
Tennessee and Mrs. C.L. Bryan, president of the Memphis association had
intended being present and had planned a formal presentation ceremony. However, Mrs. Zellner had been very ill, and
it was deemed inadvisable for anyone to be present save members of her family
and her family physician, Dr. R.E. Herring.
The box containing the
bar of honor was placed in the had of Mrs. Zellner by her Great-great-grandson,
Robert Gragg Wilson, whose picture, taken several months ago, is shown with
that of his great-great grandmother.
Dr. Herring pinned the bar upon the dress of his patient and at her
request led the family in prayer with all of them joining in the Lord's Prayer
led by Mrs. Zellner.
Members of the Zellner
family present included her daughters, Mrs. Fannie McNeely and Mrs. Joanna
Alexander, her grandson and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. S.Y. Wilson, her great grandson
and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robert Wilson and her great-great grandson,
little Robert Gragg Wilson.
A gold bar of honor
for every living mother of a Confederate veteran was the "happy
thought" of Mrs. M. Wilson, present general of the Confederate Southern
Memorial Association which was presented at the annual convention of the
association in October, at Atlanta. All
state presidents were instructed to
find the mothers in their states, with name and credentials of their veteran
sons, and report same to the president general. Twelve applications had been received up to Feb. 1, from Georgia,
Florida, Tennessee and Louisiana, ages ranging from 95 to 102.
Mrs. Charles W.
Frazier, state president from Tennessee, has had the honor of presenting the
bar to the next oldest mother in the person of Mrs. Zellner, who will be 100
years of age on Oct. 31, 1920. Mrs.
Zellner is the mother of the late John W. Zellner, Pittman, 13th Tennessee
regiment. She is the widow of the late
Rev. Marion Zellner who was appointed
chaplain in the 12th Tennessee cavalry partisans Rangers, under Col.
Richardson. Both father and son served
until the end of the war, the latter dying many years afterwards from the
effects of wounds he received in service and from which he suffered throughout
his life. Mrs. Zellner, as well as her
husband, was born in North Carolina; immigrated to Mississippi, was married at
Hernando in February 1842, came to Tennessee as a bride and reared a family of
four sons and five daughters of whom one son and three daughters now live.
She makes her home
with a daughter, Mrs. McNeely, who, widowed in her youth, has devoted her life
in the care and comfort of her mother.
Mrs. Zellner has 18 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 7
great-great grandchildren. She takes an
active interest in all current events and followed the course of the world
war. Her recent formal presentation of
her bar but Wednesday in her own room in the presence of her family, it was
given to her by Master Robert Gragg Wilson.
To know her is to love
her. She is a wonderful character. She gave her heart to God when she was a
little girl. When she was a little over
22 years old she gave her life into the care and keeping of a noble young
man. They lived together happily until
the Civil War took her husband and 17 year old son to fight for their country,
leaving her alone with very small children on a big country farm. Everyone who lived through those dark days
knows what a struggle this was. She
fought on bravely alone, until the close of the war, when God gave her back her
husband to live to a ripe old age and to take his granchildren on his knee and
tell them stories of the days of the Confederacy.
Her son, John William
Zellner, though wounded five times,
came back to his home at the close of the war, and later married and reared a
large family of children.
To Mrs. Zellner goes
the honor of receiving the first of the bars which will be awarded to all
living mothers of former Confederate soldiers.

AN AGED RESIDENT DEAD (Newspaper obituary from a Marysville paper)
One of the very oldest citizens of our city
passed away Tuesday morning at 1
o’clock. Her death was very sudden and
unexpected. When in the forepart of the winter she lay seriously
sick with pneumonia and heart trouble,
no one expected the aged lady to rally, the disease combined with old age seemingly making all recovery
impossible. Contrary to the predictions of all, she rallied and once
more regained her strength, until on
Tuesday morning after a brief attack of her old trouble she fell peacefully asleep. Anna Catharine Zoellner was born May 1st, 1814, in Halsdorf,
Hessia, Germany, where she was reared
and educated, and where she lived most of
her life. There she was married
to Henry Zoellner and there all her
children, ten in number, were born.
In 1869, she and family emigrated
for this country and settled in Hamilton, Ohio, two years later her husband died and left her to continue her
pilgrimage alone. At Hamilton three of her children died. In 1880 she came to this city and lived
with her daughter, Matilda Wagner, on
South Chestnut Street. A little more than a year ago her daughter, Mary Kandel,
died, whom she now joins in the world
beyond the grave. Mrs. Zoellner was a
very robust and strong person, physically, far
above the average. She was
during her whole life a constant and consistent member of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church and lived in Christian peace and harmony with all around her, doing many kind acts of Christian
benevolence and mercy quietly and
unostentatiously. For years she has
been resignedly awaiting her end, and
now at last she calmly passed over with sure hope of a glorious resurrection and a never-ending life of unalloyed
happiness in her Savior’s kingdom of
glory. She attained the high old age
of 85 years, 9 months and 12 days, and
leaves six children; Valentine Zoellner, Mrs. John Coleman, Mrs. Horst
and Mrs. Wagner, of this city; Mrs.
George Yeachle, of Hamilton; also two
step-sons, one at Hamilton, the other at Sandusky. She leaves also a sister in (St. Paul, Minn.), 28 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. The funeral
services take place on Friday as follows; 1:30 at the house, 2 at the church (sun time) and will be conducted by the
pastor, F.W. Abicht. All friends are cordially invited to attend.

Notes for MARTHA MABRY: OBITUARY
Mrs. Martha Zellner,
wife of Bro. George Zellner, died at her home on January 7th, 1882. She suffered severely for two days, from a
sudden attack of congestion, but became easy and calmly breathed her last as
pleasantly as if dropping asleep.
She was a daughter of Elder Daniel Mabry,
one of Monroe's noble pioneers, who many years ago filled out his allotted time
and was called to his long home. She
was born May 12th, 1828, being 53 years, seven months and 25 days of age.
She united with the Primitive Baptist
church in 1852, and was baptized by Elder William Dismuke, and lived a sound
and consistent Baptist up to her death.
She was dearly beloved and highly esteemed by all who knew her. I have known her a long while and it was
always a pleasure to me to meet her, and to hear her talk. She was kind mild and pleasant, and good
company, and certainly was one of the Excellent of the Earth. She was the mother of ten children, three of
whom preceded her to the grave, and she now leaves her dear husband, and seven
children all grown, with many relatives and friends to mourn their loss, which
is her eternal gain. But our sister is
not dead, God has only taken her to her eternal home there to live with Christ
her Savior. In this dispensation of
God's providence, her husband has lost a lovely, precious and faithful
companion, her children a loving and instructive mother, the community a
sincere and good friend, and the church a pious, faithful member. May God bless the bereaved husband and
children, may they live to imitate the examples of the dear one that is gone,
and may He prepare each one of them to meet her beyond the grave in that haven
of rest where afflictions never come, and parting will be known no more, is the
desire of the writer.

Notes for DANIEL THOMAS ZELLNER:
D. T. Zellner Dead
Just twenty years ago this
fall, Daniel Thomas Zellner, oldest son of the late George Zellner, left Monroe
County for the west. he made his home
in Arkansas, and during all these years his family back in Georgia never saw
him and scarcely heard of him.
Not long since he died very suddenly at Redfield, Ark., where he
had been engaged in business for several years. No friend or relative was with him when he died, and death came
so suddenly that he had not time to make a dying statement. The people among whom he died knew very
little of him, for he was a man who kept closely his own counsel.
It was only be accident that the news of his death reached
Georgia, and non of the particulars have yet been learned.
Four brothers and two sisters survive the deceased: Messrs. Sim, George, Judge and James
Zellner, of this county, and Mrs. J. H. Sutton, of Forsyth, and Mrs. Dennis, of
Deland, Fla.

"Nabours
Family" written by W. A. Nabours
"There were three
brothers by the name of Nabours that came from England to Virginia, when it was
a colony, before the was of the revolution.
They remained in Virginia during the war. After the war they located in South Carolina and there they began
their families and in 1810 Jeremiah Nabours (the principal of these memoirs)
was born. And remained there until 1820
when he with his father moved to Tuscaloosa County Alabama. And there the subject grew up from 10 years
of age to man hood without any chance of education except a very poor country
school with only a week of actual attendance altogether during his life. There was quite a large family of the
parentage and from this home each one chose a different location and it is the
purpose of this sketch to follow only the life of the subject of this writing,
who when he left this home went to Pickens County, Alabama and there worked by
the day or month as best he could at any kind of labor he could get. Here he married Miss Mary Stewart of whom we
will have more to say later. The
subject of sketch went to the republic of Texas in 1837 on a prospecting tour
looking for a place to build a permanent home.
Late in the fall of 1837 he returned to Alabama deciding not to move his
family to Texas. Late in the fall of
1838 he moved to Itawamba County, Mississippi.
There on Jan 30, 1839 the writer was born. There the family lived until the fall of 1849 at which time the family
moved to Washington County, Texas and rented land for two years, then bought a
small farm and lived on it two years.
Sold it and moved to Bell County, Texas. Lived there one year moved to Milam County, Texas in the fall of
1854 and lived there until his death in 1876.
His life was always honorable and upright one being for many years a
minister of the Gospel in the Methodist Episcopal Church South, was never in
the iterrant book but did local work always preaching to isolated and destitute
communities. The other side of the
house the Stewarts as before stated and first known in America as the Stewarts
of Virginia and Mary Stewart who became the wife of Jeremiah Nabours was born
in Virginia but her father moved to Kentucky and there to Alabama where she and
the main subject of this paper were married and both were as one, from their
marriage until death separated them.
She surviving him for several years.
These Stewarts claimed to be direct descendants of the Mary Stewart
Queen of Scotland. But we have no proof
of this, but we do claim to have made a record for the truth and honesty
extending back to 1776 for both the Nabours and Stewart.
(This was written by
W. A. Nabours in June 1922, just before starting to New Mexico with two of his
daughters, to visit his other daughter and son who were at Three Rivers, New
Mexico at the time. While at Three
Rivers he was taken sick and brought back to Temple, Texas, near his old home,
Cameron, Texas, so that he could have every medical care but on August 19,
1922, he passed away. On Sunday morning
August 20th, his body was put away in Salem Cemetery, where his Father and
Mother had been buried.)

W. A. Nabours obituary
Saturday, August 19, 1922, Mr. W. A. Nabours
died in Temple, Texas, after an illness of two weeks.
From the home of his son, Mr. Jerry Nabours
of Cameron, funeral service was conducted by Rev. Ira F. Key, pastor of the
Cameron Methodist church were held at Salem church, of which the Nabours family
for many years had been faithful members, followed by burial in Salem cemetery.
Cameron Lodge No. 56, I. O. O. F. had
charge of impressive ritualistic services at the grave.
W. A. Nabours was born January 30, 1839 in
Mississippi. He came to Texas at the
age of ten years with the family of his father, Rev. Jeremiah Nabours a
Methodist preacher.
In 1873 Mr. Nabours was married near
Cameron to Miss Eliza Zellner. Four
children were born to them all of whom with their mother survive. They are Mr. Jerry Nabours of Cameron, Mrs.
E. L. Woodward of Santa Anna, Texas, Mrs. C. A. Edwards of Three Rivers, New
Mexico, and Mrs. Dave Robinson of Temple, Texas. Besides these, seven grand children and two great grandchildren
are left to mourn the loss of the grandfather.
All his children were in family reunion at
the home of Mrs. C. A. Edwards in Three Rivers, New Mexico when Mr. Nabours was
taken sick. After a few days of illness
there he was brought to Temple where he died Saturday at 6 p. m.
His passing is sincerely mourned by a large
circle of friends. His long life of
faithful citizenship and devotion to duty has been an inspiration to many and
the influence he exerted will continue to live.
In his suit of Confederate Gray he was a
familiar figure at the annual reunions of Hood's Texas Brigade of which he was
a most devoted member. His wife always
attended reunions with him and their absence will be keenly felt by the
thinning ranks of that noble and historic band of brave men who left Texas at
the first call for troops in 1861 and by their courage and valor made the
history of the Southland so brilliant.
Mr. Nabours was not only a make but a
preserver of those priceless recollections, having contributed to several
Southern Histories from the treasur home of his memory.
In the Confederate Veteran of Feb. 1916 was
published an article written by him, "Active Service of a Texas
Command," in which is recounted the organization and service of Co. B, 5th
Texas Regiment, Hood's Brigade, of which Mr. Nabours was a Second
Sergeant. He served bravely through
the four years of war and was one of the ten members of the Confederate Company
that left Cameron in 1861, to surrender with Lee at Appomattox. His surviving Confederate comrades in Milam,
L. W. Miller and Elbert E. Pool.
Mr. Nabours enjoyed the utmost confidence
of the people of Milam county as was proven by his long years of public
service. He was for twelve years County
Treasurer retiring at his own volition in 1910.
Later he lived in West Texas to be near his
daughters. His last home was in Santa
Anna, Texas, with his grandson Lee Woodward, who keeps alive in his name the
undying devotion of the Southern soldier for his famous chieftain.

Jim Nabours, Colorful
Range Boss and Trail Driver, Heads for Last Round Up In Death
Jim Nabours, Texas pioneer and old Trail
Driver, whose name was immortalized in Emerson Hough's famous interpretation of
moving herds from southwestern ranges by the railroad at Abilene, Kansas, died
in El Paso last week. He was 81 years
old.
Although a real character and a native of
Milam county, he was fictionized in the book "North of 36" and his
role of ranch foreman and trail boss found its way to the screen from the same
book. Emerson Hough was his
friend. On his ranch in New Mexico the
famous writer went for material for the book.
Jim Nabours told him the story of the Del Sol Ranch at Lockhart and of the
plight of Texas cattleman, who desperate for a market, turned eagerly up the
wastes to Abilene with thousands of longhorn cattle.
The men who drove the herds up the trail
were as wild and reckless lot as ever left their impress on the turbulent years
of the state's early struggle. In that
county Jim Nabours held his own and more.
In the more gentle role of citizen his contribution to the task of
civilizing the border lands was notable.
The Del Sol ranch was then many sections of
rolling plains at Lockhart. Old man
Lockhart died and left his daughter, Tasie, with millions of acres and cattle
on a thousand hills but no money with which to pay her riders. Jim Nabours was the foreman of the Del
Sol. When news came that the railroad,
then building across the continent, had reached Abilene, the range boss gathered the first herd from the
broad areas of the Del Sol and moved them out upon that colorful and romantic
trail to somewhere North of 36.
Jim Nabours wanted Taisie to stay at
home. After all it was no place for a
woman, on the trail. It was Jim's
problem. He felt responsible as only
such men could about this girl who had
sobbed in his arms when old man Lockhart died, leaving orders to his range
boss. Tasie was determined and so was
Jim lost his temper as he did a number of times on the trail up, once shooting
the daylights out of a damn Yankee who said something "agin the
South." Parental authority was
resting heavily on this rough man of the plains when he said: "My God,
Miss Taisie, ain't I yer Ma?" It
did not do any good and Taisie won and went along with the herd.
A mossy old Texas longhorn named
"Alamo" by Jim led the herd up to Abilene. When the cattle reached the town they stampeded and old Alamo was
killed by a train.
Wild Bill Hikok was city marshal at
Abilene. Some of Jim's riders had a run
in with Bill and got away with it.
Abilene was then in the bad lands.
John Wesley Hardin, Jim Taylor, and Manning and Joe Clements of Gonzales
were there as were many other desperadoes.
Wyatt Earp, the fastest man on the draw in real fiction, along with old
Bill Tilghman and Hikok finally tamed the wild men of the plains and made
Abilene safe for prospering Texas cow men.
Jim Nabours was born in Milam county. He left here is 1877 and went to Lincoln
county, New Mexico. He got mixed up in
the famous Lincoln county war and was foreman of the grand jury that indicted
Billy the Kid. The Kid was never
brought to trial. He was killed by Pat
Garrett, noted sheriff.
Several years ago Jim Nabours moved to El
Paso. He was an uncle of Homer Nabours,
county clerk, and Mrs. Pearl House, retiring county treasurer.

Picturesque Jim
Nabours in 'North of 36' was Former Resident of Milam Co.
By Mrs. Jeff T. Kemp
No novel of recent
years has attracted more favorable comment in the Southwest than Emerson
Hough's "North of Thirty Six," a romance of the cattle trail from
Texas to Abilene, Kansas. It was
adapted to the screen and filmed on the Bassett Blakely ranch near Houston, and
has been an exceptional success in the picture shows everywhere.
A prominent character in the story is Jim
Nabours, foreman of the cattle ranch.
It will be of interest to Cameron people
to know that the real Jim Nabours used to live near Cameron and is the living
uncle of Willard H. Nabours of the Cameron Chevrolet Company, of Mrs. John
House, of Jerry Nabours and that he has
a large and influential family connection in and near Cameron. The brother of the original Jim Nabours if
R. A. Nabours, who now lived hear Gause.
When W. H. Nabours of the Cameron
Chevrolet Company read North of Thirty Six he wrote to the author Emerson Hough
to ask if he knew his uncle in New Mexico and received the following letter
from him.
Chicago, April 26, 1928
Mr. W. H. Nabours
326 East Grand Ave.
Oklahoma City, Okla
My dear Mr. Nabours: Your letter is something of a starter but I
am mighty glad to get it. When I was
writing North of Thirty Six there came to me in a sort of a dream of
recollection the name "Jim Nabours" when I was hunting for a good
name for my ranch foreman.
Of course, I knew Jim Nabours on the old
Carrizo near White Oaks, New Mexico. I
lived in White Oaks in 1881 and knew all that country. Your uncle Jim and I used to kill coyotes
out on the ranch and I remember there were a few antelope there at that time.
If you know where the real Jim Nabours is
today, please let me know because I would give almost anything to see him or to
write to him. I fear that long since he
has gone to join the great majority.
Perhaps if I had know he was still living I would not have dared to
borrow his name. He will understand as
you do that there was no attempt to borrow anything more than the name. I did write, however, with every reverence
for the old Southwest which I loved so much and which had so much influence on
my later life.
Please tell me where I can find old Jim

Obituary: Mrs. Myrtle V. Isaacks Funeral Set for
Tuesday
Mrs. Myrtle Vance Isaacks,
77, of 1029 N. Alameda, died Sunday in an El Paso hospital. She was a member of a pioneer ranching
family and the mother of County Assessor, Jeff J. Isaacks.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Tuesday at Graham's
Mortuary. Officiating clergyman will be
Rev. Milton Propp, Anthony Methodist Church pastor.
Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery next to her husband, the late
Bill F. Isaacks, a prominent pioneer rancher here who died April 29, 1959.
Mrs. Isaacks was born July 25, 1888, in Carrizozo, the daughter
of James O. Nabours. her father was a
well-known cattleman who came to New Mexico from Texas in 1876 to start
ranching near Lincoln. He was once
deputized by Sheriff Pat Garett to guard Billy the Kid.
He later operated a ranch near Carrizozo for a British firm and
had a ranch of his own near Three Rivers which he sold to A. B. Fall, Secretary
of the Interior in 1922. He also drove
the mail through hostile Indian and outlaw country between Roswell and Fort
Stanton and was fictionalized in the novel North of '36, written by Emerson
Hough.
Mrs. Isaacks married the late Will F. Isaacks on June 12, 1907
in Las Cruces. He, his father and three
brothers homesteaded their ranch around the turn of the century, building it up
to one of the largest in this section of the country. The ranch was located between the eastern slopes of the Dona Ana
Mountains and the western slope of the Organs.
Old timers remember seeing Isaacks' cattle herds being herded down what
is now Las Cruces Avenue to the Sante Fe railroad corrals.
Mrs. Isaacks was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter
20, and St. Paul's Methodist Church.
In addition to County Assessor Isaacks, she is survived by
another son, W. Howard Isaacks, of Arlington, VA; 2 daughters, Mrs. Helen
Genevieve Baird, Hollywood, Calif.; and Mrs. Ruth Carvens, Anthony; a brother,

Notes for WILL ISAACKS:
from C. T.
(TRAYLOROO@YAHOO.COM) October 2001
Will and Myrtle ranched with
success east of Las Cruces, NM. They built a nice home in the upscale area of
Las Cruces, yet occupied. Much of the family are buried in the Masonic
Cemetery, Las Cruces; but not in a family plot. The cemetery office must be contacted
for directions to their various graves. Their sons Emit and Jess were rabbit
hunting close to the murder of Pat Garrett, and heard the shots: Sunday morning
29 Feb 1908. (Said Jess Isaacks to Cal Traylor.)
