Mountain
Copper Mine
Allihies, County Cork
The Mountain Mine, part of the Berehaven
Copper Mines, is located on a hill to the NW of
Allihies (see
Allihies map).
The mines were owned
by the Puxley family that lived in
Dunboy
Castle near Castletown.

and great-grandfather worked in the 1800s
Kevin and Michele on the road
from Allihies up to the mine. This
road was lined with miners'
cottages during the 1860s.
The North or Man engine
of the Mountain Mine. The
engines brought up ore or
waste from the mine shafts.
The north engine was built
about 1862.

This cottage
was larger than most and had

The owners of the mine brought in miners
from Cornwall to show
the Irish how to mine more efficiently.
They lived in the
Cornish Village, where the remains of a rock
house is in the center
left of the picture. The Cornish miners
had better living conditions
than the Irish miners, and their
children attended school.
